The underrepresentation of minorities in the sciences is a major concern to the scientific community. In endocrinology, The Endocrine Society’s Minority Affairs Committee is leading the charge, seeking to enhance cultural diversity within the field by increasing the participation, visibility, and status of minorities within the science of endocrinology. The society’s diversity program includes minority activities at Society meetings, minority student outreach, mentoring receptions, and Endocrinology Shortcourses at minority undergraduate institutions.

The Minority Affairs Committee mission is to: 

  • Develop targeted programs to increase the recruitment and retention of underrepresented minorities into the field of endocrinology.
  • Advocate ethnic and cultural diversity by promoting the visibility and participation of underrepresented groups within Society programs and services.
  • Make recommendations for and monitor the appointment of underrepresented minority members to serve in the governance in order to ensure a strong pipeline of such individuals for Society leadership positions at all levels.
  • Encourage and support initiatives addressing diversity-related issues throughout the Society governance, including substantive endocrinology-related issues such as health disparities.

To achieve these goals, the Committee has developed outreach programs for students at all levels from high school to graduate school and for professionals already in the field.
