Science News Reporter Receives Endocrine Society Award for
Excellence in Science and Medical Journalism

San Diego, CA— Today, The Endocrine Society announced Science News Reporter Tina Hesman Saey the recipient of the Society’s annual Award for Excellence in Science and Medical Journalism.  Hesman Saey, the author of the winning article, “Dying to Sleep” was honored last night at the Society’s 92nd Annual Meeting & Expo in San Diego, California.

Established in 2008, the award was created to recognize outstanding reporting that enhances the public understanding of health issues pertaining to the field of endocrinology.

In her in-depth report, Hesman Saey examines how the body is impacted by insufficient sleep.  She explains how losing sleep, even for one night, can trigger a flood of changes throughout the body.  She successfully communicates the complex physiological processes in terms of general understanding.  The article appeared in the October 24, 2009 issue of Science News.

The Award for Excellence in Science and Medical Journalism consists of a presentation piece, and travel and accommodations to attend the Society’s Annual Meeting currently being held in San Diego from June 19-22.  The award was presented by Robert A. Vigersky, MD, president of The Endocrine Society.
