Chevy Chase, MD—The Endocrine Society issued the following statement today upon Congress’ confirmation of Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D., as the new director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH):

“The Endocrine Society is pleased that Congress has confirmed President Obama’s nomination of Dr. Francis Collins as the 16th director of the NIH.  Dr. Collins is one of the most accomplished scientists of our time.  His landmark discoveries of disease genes and his leadership of the National Human Genome Research Institute and the Human Genome Project have led to a greater understanding of the connection between genes and diseases.  His seminal work changed the way scientists from around the world approach research into the causes of disease. Furthermore, his vision for translating basic research into clinical applications will guide his leadership for the nation’s biomedical enterprise.

During his plenary address at the Society’s Annual Meeting this past June, Dr. Collins urged basic researchers to become more involved in translating their work and applications into clinical practice.  We support Dr. Collins’ mission and we recognize his tireless pursuit of scientific advancement.  We are eager to work with Dr. Collins and our other colleagues at the NIH to further strengthen our nation’s leadership in science, health and health care.”
