Washington, DC – Members of The Endocrine Society have elected five new Officers and Council members whose terms will begin after ENDO 09, the 91st Annual Meeting of The Endocrine Society. The meeting takes place in Washington, DC, June 10-13, 2009. The new Officers and Council members are:
• Kelly Mayo, PhD: President-Elect
• Nanette Santoro, MD: Vice President, Clinical Science
• John Marshall, MD, PhD: Secretary-Treasurer-Elect
• Susan Mandel, MD, MPH: Council Member, Physician-in-Practice Seat
• Jennifer Larsen, MD: Council Member, At-Large Seat
Dr. Mayo will serve as President-Elect in 2009-2010 and then serve as President in 2010-2011. He is a professor and chairman of the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology & Cell Biology and is the director for the Center for Reproductive Sciences at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. His recent work with the Society includes serving on the Committee on Governance Affairs as well as co-chairing the Bridge Grant Review Group. In 2007 he served on the Minority Programs Task Force and from 2004-2007 was a Council Member and liaison to the Trainee Development and Student Affairs Committee. He has been active in Society leadership since 1996 having chaired the Research Affairs Committee and participated on the Strategic Planning and Awards committees. He served as an associate editor and on the editorial board for Molecular Endocrinology as well as the editorial boards for Endocrinology and Endocrine Reviews. Among a long list of awards and honors, he was the 1994 recipient of the Society’s Ernst Oppenheimer Award. He received his PhD from the University of Washington-Seattle.
Dr. Santoro will serve a three-year term as Vice President, Clinical Science (2009-2012). She is a professor and director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Most recently she has been serving on the Society’s Advocacy and Public Policy Outreach Core Committee, on The Hormone Foundation Board, as chair of the Reproductive Medicine Network Steering Committee and on the editorial boards of JCEM and Menopause. Past leadership roles in the Society include membership on the Special Programs and Annual Meeting Steering
Committees and on the Androgen Therapy in Women and Hormone Therapy Task Forces. In 2006 she was awarded Mentor of the Year from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Clinical Research Training Program. She received her MD from the Albany Medical College of Union University in Albany, New York.
Dr. Marshall will serve as Secretary-Treasurer- Elect in 2009-2010 and then serve as Secretary-Treasurer in 2010-2013. He is the Andrew D. Hart Professor of Internal Medicine and director of the Center for Research in Reproduction at the University of Virginia. Society involvement dates back to the mid-1970s with service on the editorial board of JCEM and as editor of Endocrinology (1979-1983). Through the years, he has served numerous terms in Society leadership including Council and on the Nominating, Finance and Executive Committees. He has lectured across the United States as well as throughout the world. Among a long list of honors and awards, he is the recipient of the Society’s 2008 Clinical Investigator Award. He received his MD from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom.
Dr. Mandel will serve a three-year term in the Physician-in-Practice designated seat on Council. She is a professor of medicine and radiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine also serving as the associate chief for the university’s Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism as well as the program director for the Fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. She is the director of the Thyroid Nodule Clinic at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She is the founder and director of the Society’s Hands-On Thyroid Ultrasound Workshops and a current member of the Clinical Guidelines Subcommittee and Meetings, Education and Program Committee. She has served on the editorial board of JCEM and as a member of the Nominating, Media Advisory, and Clinical Affairs Committees. She received her MD from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University and her MPH from Harvard School of Public Health.
Dr. Larsen will serve a three-year term as an at-large member of Council. She is professor and chief of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism and the associate dean for Clinical Research at the College of Medicine, University of Nebraska Medical Center. She currently serves as chair of the Society’s CEU Committee and member of the Scientific and Education Program Core Committee. Past leadership roles within the Society include membership on the Annual Meeting Steering, Special Programs and Development Committees. She received her MD from the University of Iowa School of Medicine.
