Robert M. Carey Elected President of The Endocrine Society

Chevy Chase, MD—Robert M. Carey, M.D., M.A.C.P., David A. Harrison III Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Dean Emeritus, and University Professor at the University of Virginia School of Medicine has been elected president of The Endocrine Society.

"The Endocrine Society has been my intellectual home, contributing greatly to my knowledge and integration in basic and clinical science and clinical practice, and it is an honor to be elected president," said Dr. Carey. "I look forward to building upon the Society's great reputation as the vital source for the accumulation, organization, and dissemination of valid scientific information on endocrinology."

The new president says one of his major initiatives will be the development of a systematic program for the preparation, authentication, and publication of authoritative scientific statements covering major issues in endocrinology.

Dr. Carey notes that the Society's strength is bolstered by the unique makeup of its membership. "The Society's tripartite membership is rare among medical and research societies and each discipline has its own needs," he said. "However, the coalescence of basic researchers, clinical researchers, and clinicians provides exciting opportunities that make the Society a powerful player in advocacy for the field."

Dr. Carey's work with the Society includes serving on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, and on the Finance Committee, Development Committee, and Council.  He was Council Representative to the Publications Committee and Clinical Initiatives Committee. He served on the Hormone Foundation Initiation Committee, the Blue Ribbon Committee on the Hormone Foundation, the Clinical Research Subcommittee, the Research Advisory Committee, the Hormone Foundation Board of Directors, the Hormone Foundation Committee, and the Primary Aldosteronism Clinical Guidelines Taskforce.

Dr. Carey is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Society's 2005 Distinguished Physician Award. He will also be receiving the Distinguished Achievement Award of the American Heart Association in Atlanta later this month.
