Katharine Davis Fishman has been awarded the fourth annual Award for Excellence in Science and Medical Journalism from The Endocrine Society. The winning article “Boning Up on Bone Drugs” appeared in the June 2010 issue of More Magazine.

Upon learning that 10 years of prescribed bisphosphonate use following an osteoporosis diagnosis was the likely cause of her painful femur break, Fishman’s article chronicles her fact-finding mission aimed at examining the risks, benefits and timing of bisphosphonate use.  She explains how a medicine that’s prescribed to prevent fractures can sometimes cause them and, who should and shouldn’t take these drugs.  Told through her personal experience, Fishman successfully communicates her findings in terms of general understanding. 

The award was presented by Kelly E. Mayo, PhD, president of The Endocrine Society, at the annual meeting, ENDO 2011, in Boston, Massachusetts.
