The Endocrine Society Elects Five Members to its Governing Council

CHEVY CHASE, MD – Members of The Endocrine Society have elected five new Officers and Council members whose terms will begin after ENDO 08, the 90th Annual Meeting of The Endocrine Society. The meeting will take place in San Francisco, Calif., June 15-18, 2008. The new Officers and Council members are:
Dr. Vigersky will be President-Elect in 2008-2009 and then serve as President in 2009-2010. He is the director of the Diabetes Institute at Walter Reed Health Care System in Washington, D.C. His work with the Society includes serving as the delegate to the American Medical Association, a member of the Direction V Working Group, a member and past-chair of the Clinical Affairs Committee and current chair of the Clinical Guidelines Subcommittee. He also served on the Joint Taskforce on Academic Relations, the Strategic Planning and Development Committee, the Publications Committee, and Council. He also received the Society's 2007 Sidney H. Ingbar Award for Distinguished Service in Endocrinology. He received his medical degree from Boston University. Dr. Mendelson will serve a three-year term as Vice President representing the Basic Scientist constituency. She is professor of biochemistry and obstetrics and gynecology of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center; and director of the North Texas March of Dimes Birth Defects Center. Her work with the Society includes serving as a member of the Publishing Core Committee and the Annual Meeting Steering Committee. She also served as chair of the Publications Committee, Nominating Committee, Education Committee and Council. She received her doctorate from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J. Dr. Powers will serve a three-year term in the Clinical Scientist designated seat on Council. He is the director of the Vanderbilt Diabetes Center and the Joe C. Davis Professor of Biologic Sciences, professor of medicine, molecular physiology, and biophysics, at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn. He has served the Society as a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, co-chair of the Annual Meeting Steering Taskforce, and chair of the Annual Meeting Steering Committee. He also chaired the Meetings and Educational Programs Committee, and was also a member of the Basic Science Task Force. He received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences. Dr. Trainer will serve a three-year term as an at-large member of Council. He is a professor of endocrinology and clinical director of the department of endocrinology at Christie Hospital and University of Manchester, England. He served the Society as a member and clinical chair of the Annual Meeting Steering Committee. He has served on the editorial board of Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. He also served as a member of the Meetings and Educational Programs Committee. He received his medical degree from Edinburgh University in Scotland. Dr. Woodruff will serve a three-year term as an at-large member of Council. She is a professor in the department of neurobiology and physiology, Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill. She served the Society as an editorial board member for Endocrine Reviews, the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, and Molecular Endocrinology. She also served on the Basic Science Task Force, the Meetings and Educational Programs Committee, , the Membership Committee and as basic science chair of the Annual Meeting Steering Committee. She received her Ph.D. from Northwestern University, in Evanston, Ill.
