Publications Committee Issues Call for Nominations and Applications for Editor-in-Chief of JCEM
Dr. Paul W. Ladenson will complete his five-year term as Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM) on December 31, 2009, having provided exceptional organizational skills, leadership, and dedicated stewardship over the journal.
The Endocrine Society now seeks nominations and applications for the position of Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of JCEM. JCEM covers topics in endocrinology and metabolism for the clinical researcher and practicing physician.
JCEM is The Endocrine Society’s flagship clinical journal. Its 2006 impact factor, 5.799, ranks it in the top 4% of all scientific journals surveyed. In 2007, the journal received more than 2,800 submissions.
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must be members in good standing of The Endocrine Society. They should be a dynamic, nationally recognized clinical researcher and practicing physician, able to maintain and enhance JCEM’s reputation for relevance to the practice and advancement of endocrinology, capable of leading the journal to outcomes consistent with The Endocrine Society’s Strategic Plan, and willing to devote a significant portion of their time to Journal affairs.
OVERSIGHT AND SUPPORT
The Publications Core Committee oversees the scope, policies and the performance of each journal. The new EIC will work with a Senior Director, a managing editor, and manuscript-processing staff who are located in a centralized editorial office at the Chevy Chase, MD, office of The Endocrine Society. The EIC will receive an attractive honorarium and have the option of having a half-time administrative assistant at his or her institution.
DATES OF SERVICE
The new EIC will assume responsibility on January 1, 2010, but must be available to coordinate the transition of editorship in mid-2009, and be prepared to receive new submissions for peer review on November 1, 2009. The term will end December 31, 2014, but the EIC must be available, during the editorial office’s transition operations, until January 31, 2015.
TIMETABLE FOR APPLICATIONS

Applications must be submitted by September 12, 2008. Nominations must be submitted in time for the search committee to solicit applications from nominees by this date.

Selected finalists will be contacted in October 2008 and asked to provide answers to specific questions about their vision for the journal by early January 2009.

The Publications Core Committee will interview finalists in person at its March 13, 2009, meeting and shortly thereafter recommend an EIC-Elect to The Endocrine Society Council for approval.
MATERIALS FOR APPLICATIONS
The applicant must submit a full CV along with a letter of application, not to exceed three single-spaced pages, that encompasses the following:

A brief description of his or her qualifications, including past journal editorial experience;

A discussion of the present status of the journal, opportunities for growth and enhancement, and plans to achieve these goals;

A short statement outlining the approach to editing the journal, including goals for content, target readership, and manuscript acceptance criteria. The statement should include a description of the applicant’s vision for the journal.

Identification of individuals who might serve as associate editors.
Nominators should provide a brief description of the EIC candidate’s qualifications for the position. Nominations should allow sufficient time for nominees to be contacted and prepare the application materials.
