TRANSLATIONAL - Thyroid Gland Organogenesis: Genes, Mechanisms & Evolution

Sunday, June 20, 2010
5:30 PM - 6:30 PM

  • Roberto Di Lauro, Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn (Italy)

The thyroid gland develops from the floor of the primitive pharynx, from which thyroid cell precursors migrate to the front of trachea where they will begin to synthesize thyroid hormones. The genetic mechanisms responsible for formation of a functional thyroid gland have been partly elucidated and have contributed insights into the genetic cause of congenital hypothyroidism. New genes and complex genetic mechanisms involved in such a process will be discussed.
