ESAP-ITE Background Information ESAP-ITE™ is designed to help Program Directors as we strive to demonstrate to the ACGME that we are evaluating outcomes, identifying areas for improvement, and addressing those areas. Participation in the exam should also provide fellows with an excellent opportunity for self-assessment, allowing them to identify areas of deficiency that require further learning and to compare their performance to that of the entire cohort. ESAP-ITE should be considered as one part of a balanced approach at learning endocrinology. The questions within ESAP-ITE are included in a larger product, ESAP, released later each year. For a more extensive coverage of topics in endocrinology, along with in-depth discussions of the questions, we would suggest you explore use of the complete ESAP product. These two tools can serve as part of the foundation upon which one prepares for the ABIM certifying exam. Complimenting ESAP and ESAP-ITE with a board review course, as is offered annually by The Endocrine Society, will provide an excellent core of knowledge to obtain certification. The ESAP-ITE™ is written by a committee of 9 expert endocrine clinician authors. The committee follows a content blueprint and writes 60 multiple-choice questions that are subjected to several reviews and revisions. The questions are written at the level of proficiency expected from second or third year clinical endocrinology fellows and cover the spectrum of knowledge in clinical endocrinology.
The ESAP-ITE ™ is modeled, in part, after the blueprint for the American Board of Internal Medicine’s certification examination in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism.
Dates for ESAP-ITE™ The 2012 ESAP-ITE™ will be available for administration from March 30 to April 30, 2012. Program Directors will decide which day within this period of time would be most convenient for them. The examination will be online only. It is advised that all fellows in each program take the examination on the same day and in a proctored setting. This is a “closed book” examination. It is anticipated that the examination will take 2 to 3 hours to complete. Reproduction of the examination in any way (eg, printing the examination questions) is not to be allowed.
The final score is a percentage determined by the total number of questions that are answered correctly. There is no penalty for guessing. Because the ESAP-ITE™ examination is an educational implement, there is no pass/fail cutoff.
The Endocrine Society and the Association of Program Directors in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism consider the results to be confidential and do not release them to any agency, organization, or person other than the program director. The program director receives:
Each examinee receives a report that shows:
Program Directors interested in evaluating their fellows in the winter of 2012 should address inquiries to Society Services at societyservices@endo-society.org or (301) 941-0210.
