MAINTENANCE OF CERTIFICATION AT THE ENDOCRINE SOCIETY
The Endocrine Society’s members hold certificates from 11 different Medical Boards. At present the Society offers activities to meet the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) requirements of the American Board of Internal Medicine for certification in Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism and the American Board of Pediatrics for certification in Pediatric Endocrinology. Reciprocity agreements between the Medical Boards may allow members to apply points from Endocrine Society MOC activities approved by ABIM and ABP toward the requirements of other Boards. Members are encouraged to ask their Boards about such opportunities.
The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) MOC process universally requires that physicians meet four core requirements:
Part I: Licensure and Professional Standing - Hold a valid, unrestricted medical license (CME offering from the Society)
Part II: Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment - Educational and self-assessment programs determined by your member Board (ESAP MOC or Pediatric ESAP)
Part III: Cognitive Expertise - Demonstrate your specialty-specific skills and knowledge by completing a secure exam (Endocrine Board Review Course and Pediatric Endocrine Board Review Syllabus)
Part IV: Practice Performance Assessment - Demonstrate your use of best evidence and practices compared to peers and national benchmarks by completing Practice Improvement Modules (PIMs) and approved QI activities
At the present time, The Endocrine Society produces curriculum-wide self-assessment programs in Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism (ESAP) and Pediatric Endocrinology (Pediatric ESAP), as well as targeted modules in a variety of sub-subspecialty endocrine practice areas. In addition, the Society is actively developing Self-Evaluation of Practice Performance modules and is collaborating with MED-IQ to offer an ABIM-approved Self-Evaluation of Practice Performance activity in Diabetes Care. Reciprocity agreements between the ABIM and ABP may allow pediatric endocrinologists to use this PIM for ABP Part 4 credit.
