Workforce Study of Endocrinologists

A consortium consisting of The Endocrine Society, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and the American Diabetes Association, with participation by The Association of Program Directors of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism; the American Thyroid Association; and Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society, asked The Lewin Group to conduct a workforce study of endocrinologists. The results of the study are presented in three sections.

Section one defines and describes the current workforce, its training and certification status, and its demographic characteristics.

The second section examines the factors affecting the supply of endocrinologists, and the factors affecting the demand for endocrinologists.

The third portion of the paper applies the Endocrinologist Workforce Model. The study uses this model to project the effects of alternative health care market scenarios on supply and demand for the services of endocrinologists over the next 20 years.
