As reported in the last issue of Endocrine Insider, the Scientists & Engineers for America (SEA) posed 14 scientific and technology-related questions to Senator Obama and Senator McCain to try to engage the candidates in a debate on the value of research and technology. The questions cover a broad range of scientific issues, including biosecurity, scientific integrity, innovation, genetics, stem cells, and investment in basic research. Senator McCain provided answers to the questions this week stating that he has supported and will continue to support increased funding for basic research and that he would take steps to ensure that federal research dollars are not wasted on bureaucracy. He also stated a belief that research can reduce healthcare costs. On the implications of genetics research, Senator McCain stated that he would seek the counsel of experts. He did not directly address the issue of the current limitations on embryonic stem cell research, but stated his support for alternative sources of stem cells.
