Both the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the American Medical Association (AMA) have recently posted new resources on ICD-10 implementation and HIPAA electronic standard transactions. CMS has launched a website for information and education on version 5010, the revised X12 standards for HIPAA transactions, necessary for implementation of ICD-10. Whether physicians work through a clearinghouse or directly with payers on HIPAA-regulated transactions, physicians and other HIPAA “covered entities” (health care providers, payers, and clearinghouses) are required to implement 5010 by January 1, 2012. On the CMS website, providers can view background information on the new standards, regulatory information, and outreach efforts by CMS. Information will be updated regularly and can be found here. The AMA has also created a helpful document on the implementation of 5010 and on changes to data collection and billing systems. Titled “7 Steps Practices Can Take Now To Prepare for 5010,” the document is aimed at helping physicians and their staff prepare for these changes. The document is located here.

Finally, CMS has released a publication for providers titled “ICD-10-CM/PCS Myths and Facts” (June 2009), which presents accurate information on ICD-10-CM in the face of many rumors on the development and implementation of the new coding system. The fact sheet is located here.

As ICD-10 implementation proceeds, The Endocrine Society will continue to provide resources and information through future issues of Endocrine Insider.
