National Diabetes Education Program Update – April 2008

Endocrine Insider
April 17, 2008

The April issue of News & Notes from the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) outlined the current status of a number of NDEP’s strategic initiatives, including the “Small Steps Big Rewards: Prevent Type 2 Diabetes” program, which The Endocrine Society helped develop through its participation on NDEP’s Steering Committee.

The newsletter also reported on the activities of NDEP’s Support Behavior Change Committee, which currently is reviewing a series of existing tools and resources designed to help people control their diabetes through lifestyle modifications. The committee’s next steps will be to define opportunities for the development of new resources or the repackaging of existing tools. In order to identify a broad range of current resources, NDEP has asked its organizational partners to share materials that they found to be effective in changing behavior. Examples include programs that teach small lifestyle changes, individual tools for lifestyle modification, and research that demonstrates ways to engage people with diabetes in behavior change efforts.

If you have information on effective resources and tools for changing behavior in patients with diabetes or who are at risk for developing diabetes, please contact NDEP staff member Gary Curtis at gcurtis@hagersharp.com.
