On September 3, The National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced that it will award more than $40 million to research projects under its new grant program called EUREKA (for Exceptional, Unconventional Research Enabling Knowledge Acceleration). The EUREKA program, opened in September 2007, targets investigators who are testing novel, unconventional hypotheses or are pursuing major methodological or technical challenges. The first round of awards saw 38 projects funded; the winning projects are described as exceptionally innovative and influential. Awardees may receive direct costs of approximately $200,000 per year for up to four years. Award amounts and duration of each award will vary from application to application based on the nature of the research. Additional EUREKA awards may be made in the fall, and NIH has re-announced the program for next year.
