The Steering Committee of the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP)—a cross-cutting program to improve the care of patients with diabetes—met in Washington, D.C., on May 29, 2008. Julio Rosenstock, M.D., is The Endocrine Society's representative to the group. One item up for discussion was the "Parents: YOU are Key to Helping Your Teen Deal with Diabetes" campaign led by Endocrine Society member Francine Kaufman, M.D. The campaign, launched in November 2007, offers tips for parents on how to effectively teach diabetic teens proper diabetes management and assist them in appropriate transition from adolescent to adult care. New resources for this campaign, such as additional tip sheets, pamphlets, and interactive quizzes, are available on the NDEP website.
Other topics of discussion included an update on the "Power to Prevent: A Family Lifestyle Approach to Diabetes Prevention" campaign and the proposed use of estimated average glucose (eAG) measures in the care of patients with diabetes.
