On March 20, 2009 the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced a new program entitled Research and Research Infrastructure “Grand Opportunities” or “GO” grants program. The program is one of many initiatives related to the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. “GO” grants will support projects that address large, specific biomedical research endeavors that will benefit from significant 2-year funds without the expectation of additional NIH funding beyond two years. The projects funded by the “GO” grants program must provide high short-term impact, and a high likelihood of enabling growth and investment in biomedical research and development, public health and health care delivery. The program is also intended to support large scale research projects that accelerate critical breakthroughs, early and applied research on cutting edge technologies, and new approaches to improve the synergy and interactions among multi and interdisciplinary research team.   NIH has allocated approximately $200 million of the ARRA funds to the grant program and must spend those funds by September 30, 2010.  To apply for the “GO” grant program, applications must have budgets larger than $500,000 total costs for two years. The application deadline is May 27, 2009. For more Information please click here.

NIH has also announced another new funding opportunity, "Recovery Act Limited Competition: Supporting New Faculty Recruitment to Enhance Research Resources through Biomedical Research Core Centers,” which is supported with funds from the ARRA. In an effort to develop biomedical research core centers, NIH is inviting applications from U.S. academic institutions to support the hiring of newly-recruited faculty.  The new faculty will be responsible for developing research projects within the context of the Biomedical Core Centers. Approximately $100 million of the ARRA funds will be spent by September 30, 2010 on these grants. The funds available and the anticipated number of awards will vary among the participating NIH Institutes and Centers. The application deadline is May 29, 2009. For more information please click here.
