Levothyroxine Shortage Partially Resolved

Endocrine Insider In late 2007, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) announced that both Bedford Laboratories and APP Pharmaceuticals were experiencing a shortage of Levothyroxine injection (Levothyroxine sodium lyophilized powder for injection) in both the 200 and 500 mcg vials. The shortage occurred due to increased demand for the product, causing a nationwide backorder. In late March, both Bedford Laboratories and APP announced that supplies of the 200 mcg Levothyroxine injection are available for patient use. Each manufacturer has the 500 mcg vials on backorder, with no estimated timetable for release.
