At ENDO 09 the Society released its inaugural Scientific Statement, which identifies EDCs as a significant concern to public health. Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals: An Endocrine Society Scientific Statement was authored by a task force co-chaired by Andrea C. Gore, PhD, and Evanthia Diamanti-Kandarakis, MD, and appeared in the June issue of Endocrine Reviews. Reporters from around the world immediately recognized the impact of the Statement, and the resulting coverage has continued to spur conversations about the potential dangers of EDCs and about required steps to shape policy and raise public awareness.
Media coverage highlights of the Scientific Statement include:
- USA Today covered the report as the lead health story on June 11, 2009.
- New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof called the Statement “landmark” and said it should serve as “a wake-up call” in his story about the potential link between endocrine-disrupting chemicals and deformations in fish and amphibians in lakes and rivers. Kristof also discussed this article during an appearance on “The Colbert Report.”
- National Public Radio’s “On Point” program dedicated a full hour to the topic of Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals. Society member and scientific statement co-author R. Thomas Zoeller, PhD, was a guest panelist on the show, which addressed the risks of exposure to EDCs and the need for improved regulations.
