Media
ENDO 09 generated excellent media coverage around the world on The Endocrine Society and its members' research. More than 75 reporters (both on-site and on-line) participated in five news conferences highlighting some of the most compelling and newsworthy findings presented at the Society's 91st Annual Meeting.
To date, the most widely covered research and stories include the release of the Society’s first Scientific Statement. This Scientific Statement on endocrine disrupting chemicals was USA Today’s lead health story on June 11. In addition, Dr. Jackie Clowes’ study on weight-loss surgery and its potential to increase bone fracture risk was reported on by the Associated Press, and Dr. Theodore Friedman's study regarding nicotine and its potential link to heart disease garnered coverage in HealthDay. The Associated Press and HealthDay stories also appeared in ABC News, Forbes, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and many other high profile media outlets.
The news conferences, which were moderated by members of the Society's Advocacy and Public Outreach Core Committee, can be viewed in their entirety online at www.endowebcasting.com.
Other outlets covering research presented at ENDO 09 include the Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal, MSNBC, CBS News and Reuters.
Advocacy
To increase awareness of issues important to the Society's membership, Government & Public Affairs staff provided ENDO attendees with an opportunity to participate in grassroots advocacy by writing to their senators and representatives about two critical issues: increasing funding for NIH in FY2010, and passing comprehensive health reform that includes a fix to the flawed Sustainable Growth Rate formula. Strong interest among attendees in these issues resulted in hundreds of letters sent to members of Congress in support of the Society's advocacy agenda.
Clinical Guidelines
Since 2007, ENDO has included well attended scientific sessions on recently developed Endocrine Society clinical practice guidelines. Continuing this trend, ENDO 09 featured presentations on three new guidelines—Evaluation & Management of Adult Hypoglycemic Disorders, Endocrine Treatment of Transsexual Persons, and Endocrine Nutrient Management of the Post-Bariatric Surgery Patient. Each presentation included an overview of the guideline presented by the chair of the task force that developed it, including recommendations and challenges, and an open discussion led by an independent moderator.
During its June 9 meeting, The Endocrine Society’s Council approved the clinical practice guideline Endocrine Nutrient Management of the Post-Bariatric Surgery Patient for submission to the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM). Also on June 9, JCEM approved for publication Endocrine Treatment of Transsexual Persons. Evaluation & Management of Adult Hypoglycemic Disorders was published in the March issue of JCEM and is currently available on The Endocrine Society website at http://www.endo-society.org/guidelines/Current-Clinical-Practice-Guidelines.cfm.
