Society Urges Research, Innovation, and Collaboration to Eradicate Obesity
|
Endocrine Insider In response to a Request for Information from the U.S. Office of Science and Technology Policy requesting ideas about the “Grand Challenges of the 21st Century,” The Endocrine Society proposes a large-scale strategy to address the American obesity epidemic. The Society encourages greater funding for research into the endocrine-related factors driving obesity, including endocrine-disrupting chemicals and endogenous hormones produced by fat cells, both of which can influence metabolism. Additionally, the Society encourages social changes, including further efforts to make affordable healthy food available to all Americans and to make neighborhoods more amenable to physical activity. By weighing in on this critical and sweeping initiative, the Society positions itself as a thought leader and as a resource to the Obama administration, demonstrating the breadth of its members’ interests and expertise. The Society’s comments may be viewed here.
