On Thursday, July 15, leaders of The Endocrine Society met with Antonio Scarpa, MD PhD, director of the Center of Scientific Review (CSR) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to discuss a number of issues regarding the peer review process.  Dr. Scarpa and CSR have instituted a number of policies intended to streamline the application and review processes, and Society leaders spoke with Dr. Scarpa about some of the changes at CSR.

President Kelly Mayo, PhD; Vice President – Basic Science Carole Mendelson, PhD; and Advocacy & Public Outreach Core Committee Chair Robert Carey, MD shared some concerns raised by Society members and asked Dr. Scarpa about CSR’s rationale on a number of proposed policies.  Specifically, the group discussed the impending elimination of supplemental data submissions, the required changes for an unfunded grant to be considered “new,” and a potentially exciting new format for peer review, which is currently in the pilot stage. Dr. Scarpa also made Society leaders aware of a mock study section resource available on YouTube to help reviewers and applicants alike to better understand the peer-review process.

More details about the Society’s discussion with Dr. Scarpa will be outlined in a future issue of Endocrine News, and resources will be made available on the Society’s website shortly.
