Endocrine Insider The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is accepting proposals for its 2011 NIH Director’s Pioneer, New Innovator and Transformative Research Projects Awards. The awards are designed to fund innovative approaches to major challenges in biomedical or behavioral research. The NIH plans to grant at least seven Pioneer Awards in summer 2011. The award is open to scientists at any career stage and each award recipient will receive up to $2.5 million in direct costs over five years. The deadline for submitting Pioneer Award applications is September 13, 2010. For more information and instructions, please click here. The Innovator award is restricted to early stage investigators (ESI) and provides up to $1.5 million in direct costs over five years. As defined by NIH, an ESI is within 10 years of completing a terminal research degree or medical residency and has not received an NIH R01 or similar grant. NIH plans to distribute at least 33 Innovator awards and the deadline for application submission is September 20, 2010. For more information, please click here. The Transformative Research Projects award is directed towards exceptionally innovative, high risk, original and/or unconventional research and is open to all clinical, basic and/or behavioral/social science research projects. The award will fund up to $25 million in total costs per year for a single project. NIH has announced that one-third of the total funding budget for these awards will be geared towards projects with more than $1 million in direct costs.
