The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced in the May 12 Federal Register that the new payment rates for DXA that were passed as part of the Affordable Care Act will go into effect on June 1, 2010. Services provided from January 1, 2010 to May 31, 2010 will be paid retroactively at the new payment rate, although it is unclear whether physicians will have to resubmit those claims.

As has been reported previously in Endocrine Insider, the Society worked with a coalition of sister societies to ensure that the health reform legislation included a remedy for the payment cuts.  The legislation restores payments to 70 percent of the 2006 rate (approximately $97) for 2010 and 2011. The coalition continues to raise awareness among policymakers of the impact of these cuts with the goal of reaching a permanent solution.
