Society and NOF Secure Senate Sponsor for DXA Bill
After several months of discussions with Senate Finance Committee offices, The Endocrine Society and National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) have secured a sponsor for a Senate companion bill to HR 4206, the “Medicare Fracture Prevention and Osteoporosis Testing Act of 2007.”

 
Endocrine Society Raises Concerns to U.S. House Committee about Potential Risks of HGH Off-Label Use
Dr. Alan Rogol, an Endocrine Society member and professor of clinical pediatrics at the University of Virginia and the Indiana University School of Medicine, testified on behalf of the Society before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on February 12, 2008, about the clinically acceptable uses for human growth hormone (HGH) and the potential risks of off-label use.

 
Physicians Riled by MedPAC Payment Proposal; President Offers Spending Fix
At its most recent meeting, the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) frustrated physicians when it chose, for the second year in a row, not to recommend an overhaul of the physician payment system—a change that the physician community strongly supports. Instead, MedPAC chose to recommend a 1.1 percent increase to physician payments in 2009, estimating that this slight bump in physician payments would cost approximately $2 billion in 2009 and $10 billion over five years.

 
Wellcome Trust to Increase Research Funding
The Wellcome Trust has announced that it will increase its five-year funding level for biomedical and related research by about 60 percent when compared to the past five years.

 
Physicians Encouraged to Participate in Practice Survey
The purpose of the survey is to collect up-to-date information on physician practice characteristics in order to positively influence national decision makers. The survey is to be issued to physicians from virtually all medical specialties, including endocrinology, to ensure accurate and fair representation for physicians and their patients.

 
Participation Needed for Survey on Radiation Safety Precautions
The ATA has formed a task force to produce recommendations on I-131 safety protocols for thyroid cancer.
