Endocrine Society staff recently attended a Capitol Hill event for the national launch of a new tool that will help raise awareness of the increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes and the need to address the problem. The Diabetes Atlas (or D-ATLAS) is an interactive web-based program that allows the user to identify and analyze disparities in diabetes rates throughout the United States. Developed by the National Minority Quality Forum (formerly the National Minority Health Month Foundation), the D-ATLAS graphically maps type 2 diabetes prevalence by race/ethnicity, age, or gender in the United States, in individual states, and in congressional and state legislative districts. The tool allows users to create customized maps of diabetes disparities, which may be used and disseminated to support educational, advocacy, and public affairs initiatives.

The Endocrine Society is part of an advisory board that helped in the development of the D-ATLAS. Other advisory board members include the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, The Obesity Society, and the American Diabetes Association. While the tool is currently not available to the public, the Society holds one licensed copy of the program. If you would like data on a specific congressional or state legislative district, please contact the Society’s Government & Public Affairs Department at govt-prof@endo-society.org.
