Voluntary Market Withdrawal of Pergolide to Be Gradual
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that the manufacturers of the Pergolide product Permax and its generic counterparts will voluntarily withdraw the drugs from the market due to concerns that the drugs may cause serious damage to patients’ heart valves. The withdrawal was prompted by two studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine in January that reported an increased risk of valvular heart disease in patients with Parkinson’s disease treated with pergolide or cabergoline.

 
New Tool Maps Diabetes Prevalence by District, Highlights Disparities
Endocrine Society staff recently attended a Capitol Hill event for the national launch of a new tool that will help raise awareness of the increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes and the need to address the problem. The Diabetes Atlas (or D-ATLAS) is an interactive web-based program that allows the user to identify and analyze disparities in diabetes rates throughout the United States.

 
House and Senate in Agreement on Increased Discretionary Spending for FY 2008
The House and Senate both recently approved non-binding budget resolutions that outline spending targets for FY 2008. The Senate passed its resolution on March 23, 2007, by a vote of 52-47, which calls for a $2.9 trillion cap on spending for FY 2008 and $18 billion more than the President’s budget for discretionary spending.

 
Alving, Rodgers Officially Appointed to Directorships
Barbara Alving, MD, has been named director of the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR). NCRR provides laboratory scientists and clinical researchers with the environments and tools they need to understand, detect, treat, and prevent a wide range of diseases. Dr. Alving has been serving as acting director of NCRR, overseeing the launch of the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) program.

 
AAMC Now Accepting Nominations for Annual Awards
The Endocrine Society encourages its members to consider submitting nominations for one or more of the annual awards given by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).

 
Research!America Holds National Forum, Advocacy Awards Gala
On Tuesday, March 20, Research!America held its annual National Forum and Advocacy Awards presentation. Society representatives were on hand for both events.
