Diabetes and Obesity

The Society has had a seat at the table in Congress since the issue of obesity was first addressed in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.  The Society's efforts have included testifying as an expert witness before key committees in both houses of Congress.  During the last five years, the Society has worked with House and Senate leaders to define and educate decision-makers regarding many aspects of obesity, particularly in the areas of metabolic syndrome and research.

As the Society is identifying existing services and new products in the areas of diabetes and obesity to highlight the Society's expertise in these areas, the opportunity exists for APOCC to help further this agenda by advocating for implementation of policy changes.  The incidence of diabetes is on the rise in the United States, and endocrinologists must focus an increasing amount of their time treating patients who suffer from diabetes and diabetes-related complications.  The Society can play a role in addressing the diabetes and obesity epidemic by advocating for greater patient and physician education, increased research funding to identify new treatments, and increased payments to physicians who treat these patients.
